    Four different factors are considered while grading diamonds to ascertain their quality and worth. These factors are cut, clarity, carat and colour. While using the grading system jewellers compares different stones easily.

    Colour:

    The colour of an diamond is graded from D to Z, where D indicated a true white diamond – a colourless diamond – and Z indicates an engagement ring that has yellow hues inside it. Since the grading progresses from D right through to Z these do accept a yellowish tone. Diamonds that are graded up to H are categorized as white diamonds. The ones that are graded from I onwards begin to show an indication of yellow in them. The colourless stones would be the rarest of all driving them to probably the most valuable diamonds.

    Clarity:

    Diamonds are not always perfect as a number of them have natural blemishes included. These blemishes might be as a result of fractures or minerals or inclusions even though the diamond is created in the earth. These blemishes disrupt what sort of light flows within the diamond and with regards to the level and extent of blemishes within the diamond determines how it may be graded from Pure to Included (FL to I). Diamonds which might be graded as pure/FL have zero visible blemishes when seen under magnification whereas diamonds that are graded as included/I have blemishes that are visible even with a human eye. The diamonds that are clear of blemishes are very valuable and rare. The grades starts from Flawless and Internally Flawless – Pure, VVS1 and VVS2 – Super Small inclusions, VS1 and VS2 – Very small Inclusions, SI1 and SI2 – Small Inclusions, I1, I2, and I3 – Included.

    Cut:

    Diamonds which can be found in the earth are cut in order that the stone has maximum sparkle and brilliance. Quality cut is why an engagement ring expensive and valuable and this is the only ingredient that is affected by humans. To be able to cut an engagement ring perfectly, more than 50% of the rough diamond must be cut away through the craftsmen. The grades to get a diamonds cut starts from Excellent – 1+ and 1, Good – 2 about three, Average – 4, Commercial – 5 and 6, and Irregular – 6 and 7.

    Carat:

    A carat is often a unit that is used to determine the load of gemstones and this is one of many factors considered while assessing the grade of a diamond ring. Diamonds that have higher carat values have more sparkle than diamonds with lesser carat value as light must traverse a greater distance.
